Fika; the Swedish 20-minute collective coffee break

Fika; the Swedish 20-minute collective coffee break

Think that grabbing a quick coffee to consume at your desk throughout the day will make you more productive? Think again. Swedish workers who are amongst the happiest, most productive and less stressed workers in the world, don’t drink coffee at their desk, instead they follow a Swedish tradition, known as Fika. Twice a day at 10am and then again at 3pm, Swedish workers take a collective 20-minute coffee break, with many workplaces banning coffee cups at people’s desks. Swedish employers firmly believe that Fika not only encourages greater cohesiveness, but studies have shown that the practice boosts productivity, helps break down hierarchies, and creates an informal way to test ideas and increase creativity.
